Bringing a vintage steamboat illustration to life

Tiny details for a great impact

To give this steamboat a true sense of realism, a lot of elements commonly seen on boats were laboriously detailed, to include the intricately-trimmed stack, the decorative name sign, the fire extinguisher, the flag waving in the air, the fire axe with a wooden handle, and the almost real lifebuoy with the corresponding label.

Illustration of a steamboat on calm water, with six inset images showing detailed views of the boat. Three insets are on each side of the main image. The details include the steam stack, the name plate, a fire extinguisher, a flag on the top of the boat, and a lifebuoy hanging on the side. The main image focuses on the full steamboat, while the insets provide close-ups of these specific features.

From flat to three-dimensional

The solid line work foundation laid out at the beginning of the illustration process ensured that all the elements were properly aligned and placed in their intended position before the three-dimensional effects were applied to complete this detailed illustration.
